Shura Council Participates in IPU General Assembly Committee Meetings

The Shura Council participated in the meetings of several committees within the work of the 146th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which Bahrain is hosting from March 11 to 15.

The Steering Committee of the General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union held a meeting today, with the participation of HE Mohammed Bin Mahdi Al-Ahbabi, member of the Shura Council, Chairman of the Permanent Committee for International Peace and Security of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The meeting was attended by HE Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Martin Chungong, and the heads of the permanent committees.

During the meeting, the agenda of the meeting committees of the Inter-Parliamentary Union was studied, and the meetings were programmed and coordinated.

The Standing Committee for International Peace and Security also began its meetings under the chairmanship of HE Al-Ahbabi, and approved its agenda items as well as its brief report on the committee's activities approved at the previous session of the General Assembly of the Union held in Rwanda last year.

For his part, member of the Shura Council Eng. Ahmed bin Hitmi Al-Hitmi, participated today in the meeting of the Standing Committee for Sustainable Development, where it reviewed and approved its brief report on the committee's activities approved at the previous session of the General Assembly of the Federation held in Rwanda last year.

It discussed the parliamentary efforts required to achieve environmental sustainability in forests and reduce carbon emissions, and reviewed the proposed draft resolution in this regard and the explanatory memorandum prepared by the rapporteurs.

In his intervention during the meeting, Al-Hitmi highlighted the efforts of the State of Qatar to reduce carbon emissions according to clear plans crystallized in the "Qatar National Strategy for the Environment and Climate Change." The Council was also represented in the meeting of the Bureau of the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, HE Dr. Sultan bin Hassan Aldosari, Member of the Council, as part of the work of the 146th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

During the meeting, the conferees discussed the committee's draft decision on trafficking in orphans and the role of parliaments in confronting it. They discussed the draft resolution on parliamentary momentum to combat misinformation and hateful and discriminatory content in cyberspace.

During the evening, the Council participated today in the Young Parliamentarians Forum, represented by HE Omair bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Member of the Council.

The meeting assessed the participation of youth at the national and international levels in parliaments and the latest developments in this regard.

The successes achieved and the challenges that hinder youth work were reviewed in order to draw conclusions and make recommendations regarding them, in addition to reviewing the efforts of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in supporting youth participation and activating their role.

Forum members exchanged views from the perspective of young people on the topic of discussion for the current session of the General Assembly of the Federation on peaceful coexistence and inclusive Societies for all and fighting intolerance, in addition to the two draft resolutions on cybercrime and new threats to security and parliamentary efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
