The Shura Council participated Thursday in a discussion session on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of Democracy, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, via videoconferencing.
HE Member of the Shura Council Mohammed Bin Mahdi Al Ahbabi represented the council in the session.
The session, titled "The IPU Universal Declaration on Democracy: 25 years on, has the declaration stood the test of time?," discussed several topics related to democracy and parliamentary efforts to promote it and ways to promote the Universal Declaration of Democracy, as well as reviewing the efforts being made in this side.
The world celebrates the International Day of Democracy on Sep. 15 every year.
The State of Qatar took the initiative to promote the adoption of the International Day of Democracy within the framework of implementing the principles of the Doha Declaration issued by the Sixth International Conference of New or Restored Democracies, hosted by Doha from Oct. 29 to Nov. 1, 2006.
