The Shura Council participated in the meeting of the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs and Sustainable Development of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA), held today in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The Council was represented in the meeting by His Excellency Eng. Ahmed bin Hitmi Al-Hitmi, Member of the Shura Council and Vice-President of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, and His Excellency Mr. Saoud bin Jassim Al-Buainain, Member of the Council.
The meeting discussed key economic and developmental issues across the Asian region, mechanisms for coordinating parliamentary efforts to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and reviewed draft resolutions aimed at strengthening parliamentary cooperation in areas related to economic development and climate change.
In his intervention, His Excellency Eng. Al-Hitmi emphasized that achieving sustainable development in Asia and globally remains contingent upon strengthening peace, stability, and respect for international law. He warned that the aggressive practices of the Israeli occupation, which have reached the level of targeting civilians and civilian facilities in Qatar, pose a direct threat to development progress and human security.
He noted that such violations not only hinder states’ efforts to build strong economies and prosperous societies, but also undermine the foundations of parliamentary partnerships aimed at addressing economic and climate challenges and achieving shared development objectives.
His Excellency stressed that the continuation of such assaults threatens food, water, and environmental security, and impedes international efforts to combat poverty and climate change — in contradiction to the core principles of sustainable development adopted by the United Nations. He called on Asian and international parliamentary bodies to assume their responsibilities in condemning such violations, working collectively to protect peoples, reinforce peace, and create a safe environment conducive to comprehensive and sustainable development.
