The Shura Council participated today in the extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which was held via videoconference.
The Council was represented at the meeting by H.E. Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti, Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council, Member of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and Vice-Chair of the Committee for the Arab Group.
During the meeting, the Committee discussed a number of items on its agenda, most notably the current developments of conflicts on the international scene, particularly the situation in the Middle East, and their implications for the activities of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Preparations for the 152nd General Assembly of the Union, scheduled to be held in Istanbul next April, were also reviewed.
In her intervention, H.E. Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti emphasized the role of parliamentarians, as representatives of the people, in resolving conflicts and wars and in achieving global security and stability through dialogue and parliamentary diplomacy. In this regard, she referred to the statement issued by the Inter-Parliamentary Union condemning the blatant Iranian attacks carried out by Iran against the State of Qatar and other sisterly countries since 28 February, calling for the adoption of practical steps and greater efforts rather than limiting actions to statements of condemnation. She noted that one of the key objectives for which the Union was established is to contribute to conflict resolution and the achievement of peace.
Her Excellency also expressed, during her intervention, her strong condemnation and denunciation of Iran’s blatant aggression against the State of Qatar and other sisterly countries in the region, as well as the continuation of its military attacks through ballistic missiles, drones, and warplanes, in flagrant violation of their national sovereignty, direct threats to security and civilian safety, and breaches of international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and established ethical standards.
Her Excellency further commended the positions of national parliaments, parliamentary unions, and organizations and their solidarity with the State of Qatar, affirming that Qatar’s position—having distanced itself from this war and escalation since the first day—remains firmly committed to supporting diplomatic efforts and mediation in resolving conflicts and wars.
