21 January 2026

The Shura Council participated today in the twelfth briefing session for parliamentarians on the United Nations, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union via videoconference, under the title: “Global Governance of Artificial Intelligence: How Prepared Is the United Nations?” The Shura Council was represented at the event by His Excellency Mr. Ahmed bin Ibrahim Al-Maliki, Member of the Council.
The session addressed issues of global governance of artificial intelligence in light of the accelerating pace of development of this technology and the expansion of its use across various fields, and the accompanying potential challenges related to human well-being, social justice, and democratic decision-making.
The session reviewed the efforts of the United Nations in the field of artificial intelligence governance, particularly through the new structures established under the Global Digital Compact, including the establishment of an independent, multidisciplinary international scientific panel to enhance scientific understanding of artificial intelligence development, as well as the launch of an annual global dialogue on artificial intelligence governance with the participation of governments and relevant stakeholders. The session also discussed the adequacy of these frameworks in addressing the risks associated with this technology and the need to strengthen relevant international regulatory frameworks.
