Shura Council Attends IPU Governing Council, Committees Meetings

As part of the 144th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) being held in Bali, Indonesia, the Shura Council participated today in the 209th session of the Governing Council.
HE Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti chaired the Shura Council's delegation.


The session witnessed the election of HE Speaker of the Indonesian People's Representative Council Puan Maharani Nakshatra as President of the 144th IPU General Assembly.


During the session, the participants reviewed the Secretary-General's report on the IPU impact for 2017-2021, the report on the IPU activities, and the report on the activities of the Executive Committee, committees, and other bodies. They also discussed issues related to the IPU membership, the IPU financial situation, and a number of topics on the agenda.


HE Secretary-General of the Shura Council Dr. Ahmed bin Nasser Al Fadhala and HE Abdulla bin Ali Al Sulaiti, a member of the Council, participated in the session.


Moreover, the IPU's Permanent Committee for International Peace and Security held a meeting today chaired by HE Mohamed bin Mahdi Al Ahbabi, a member of the Shura Council and Chairman of the Committee.


During the meeting, which was held within the work of the 144th IPU General Assembly, the committee discussed a number of issues related to regional and global peace and security operations.


They reviewed views and experiences on the topic of reconsidering and reformulating the approach perused regarding peace operations to promote lasting peace and examine mechanisms through which parliaments can collectively develop a new frame of reference as the basis for moral and ethical peace processes and set standards for further accountability and long-term oversight to guide their implementation.


In the same context, the Shura Council participated in the meeting of the Permanent Committee for Sustainable Development of the IPU, where the Council was represented by HE Abdulla bin Ali Al Sulaiti, a member of the Shura Council.


During the meeting, the committee discussed the topic of "Promoting information and communication technology as an aid to the education sector, including during times of the pandemic," where a resolution was drafted for adoption in the plenary session.


On the other hand, the Assembly of Secretaries-General of National Parliaments held a meeting today, as part of the work of the 144th General Assembly of the IPU, with the participation of HE Secretary-General of the Shura Council and President of the Arab Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments (AASGP) Dr. Ahmed bin Nasser Al Fadhala.


During the meeting, they discussed a number of issues related to the role of the General Secretariat in the National Councils and exchanged views regarding them.
