Speaker of Shura Council Meets UN Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism

27 March 2022

HE Speaker of the Shura Council Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim met on Sunday with HE Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) Vladimir Voronkov, who is currently visiting the country.

During the meeting, they reviewed aspects of cooperation between the Shura Council and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism and ways to enhance them, in addition to the efforts of the Doha-based United Nations Office of Parliamentary Participation in Preventing and Combating Terrorism, in light of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two sides.
The meeting also touched on the participation of the Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism in Doha Forum 2022, the fourth session of the strategic dialogue between the State of Qatar and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, and the high-level meeting of African parliaments on counter-terrorism hosted by Doha on March 30 and 31.

The Shura Council and the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office had signed a memorandum of understanding in February 2020, which includes undertaking joint initiatives to enhance the effective commitment of parliamentarians and facilitate the balanced and integrated implementation of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and relevant UN Security Council resolutions. The agreement includes different ways of cooperation, according to which the office was opened in Doha.
