The Shura Council, represented by HE Council Member Mohamed bin Mahdi bin Ajyan Al Ahbabi, won the chairmanship of the Inter-Parliamentary Union's Permanent Committee on Peace and International Security.

This came during the Committee's meeting held within the work of the 143rd General Assembly, currently held in Madrid.

The election of the Shura Council to chair this general committee represents a recognition by the Inter-Parliamentary Union of the pivotal and important role played by the State of Qatar to maintain security and peace in the world, thanks to the wise and rational policy of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.

The Permanent Committee on Peace and International Security is one of the four Permanent committees of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and it is the most important one of the four committees, given the topics tabled on its agenda.

Today, the committee discussed a number of issues related to regional and global peace and security operations. Views and experiences were also exchanged on the subject of reconsidering and reformulating the approach to peace operations in order to promote lasting peace, and discuss mechanisms through which parliaments can collectively develop a new frame of reference that will serve as a base for moral and ethical peace operations. It will also set standards for greater accountability and long-term control to guide their implementation.

On the sidelines of the meeting, a panel discussion was held to tackle the role of parliaments in addressing the risks of diverting arms transfers.
