The Shura Council participates in a parliamentary event for Arab women parliamentarians in Amman

The Shura Council participated in the round table organized by the Coalition of Women Parliamentarians from Arab Countries to Combat Violence against Women, in cooperation with the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, under the title “Arab Women’s Voices for Gaza.”

The Council was represented at the event, which was held on the occasion of International Women's Day in the Jordanian capital, Amman, over two days and concluded its work today, by Her Excellency Mrs. Sheikha bint Youssef Al-Jufairi, a member of the Council.

In her intervention during the session held within the roundtable activities, which revolved around the topic of “Raising awareness of the Arab Declaration to Combat All Forms of Violence against Women and Girls,” Her Excellency referred to the efforts of parliamentarians to raise awareness of women’s rights and their right to live in dignity and security, recalling in this context Legislation enacted by parliamentarians to protect women’s rights and combat violence against them, and their role in parliamentary oversight of the work of executive bodies and monitoring the committees and entities that were formed to care about women.

As part of her presentation of the country's efforts regarding the topic of the session, Her Excellency spoke about the country's accession, in accordance with the directives of its wise leadership, to regional and international conventions concerned with women's rights, reviewing the most prominent of those charters and agreements signed by the State of Qatar. In this aspect, she emphasized the role of parliamentarians in spreading awareness of these charters and agreements.

In the same context, Her Excellency addressed the country’s efforts, through its enactment of legislation to protect women’s rights and prevent discrimination against them, to protect the family and maintain its cohesion, noting that the Shura Council is carefully following up on the implementation of these legislations.

Her Excellency Sheikha Al-Jufairi pointed out that the country regularly reviews family legislation, and added, “The State of Qatar has established civil and academic institutions that support the rights of women and the family and protect them from violence and all forms of discrimination, in accordance with what is stated in the texts and purposes of the permanent constitution of the state, and included in the three national strategies.” And in Qatar National Vision 2030.”

Her Excellency Mrs. Sheikha bint Yousef Al-Jufairi stressed the importance of the role of parliamentarians in playing an effective role in raising awareness among citizens and residents about this vital issue, by directing efforts towards enhancing public awareness of the importance of fighting violence, to ensure the efficiency of relevant laws and their proper evaluation, calling for Uniting efforts to support and promote the Arab Declaration to Combat Violence against Women.

Her Excellency touched on ways to end all forms of violence against women, pointing out in this aspect that it boils down to preventing violence and preventing its occurrence by addressing its causes, which are based on wrong social norms and discrimination between the sexes.

She noted that the way to achieve this is to spread awareness and strengthen relations of mutual respect between men and women. The necessity of empowering women in society and granting women all their human rights. She emphasized the role of parliamentarians in this aspect, by leading campaigns to enhance awareness of women’s rights and prevent assault and violence against them, reviewing in this regard what parliamentarians can do to achieve this.

In her intervention during the work of the first day, Her Excellency Mrs. Sheikha bint Yousef Al-Jufairi expressed her appreciation and solidarity with the steadfastness of women in the Gaza Strip and all the occupied Palestinian territories.

  In this context, she pointed to the pioneering Qatari position under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of the country, “may God protect him,” in supporting the Palestinian cause and providing relief aid to the brothers in Gaza, and the country’s efforts to achieve a humanitarian truce and exchange of prisoners, stressing in this context He emphasized the necessity of a ceasefire and adherence to the two-state solution.

Her Excellency expressed her appreciation and support for the struggle and steadfastness of Palestinian women in the Gaza Strip and in the occupied Palestinian territories, stressing that Qatari women stand alongside their sisters in Palestine and support their heroic stances.
