Shura Council Highlights Qatar's Keenness on Enhancing International Efforts Maintaining Peace, Security

The Shura Council affirmed Qatar's keenness on actively contribute to enhancing international efforts to maintain international peace and security by supporting all international initiatives and activities aimed at achieving this.

This came at a speech given by HE member of the Shura Council Saad bin Ahmed Al Masnad during the meeting of the permanent committee on United Nations affairs of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which was held as part of the 147th General Assembly of the Union in the Angolan capital, Luanda.

He highlighted Qatar's efforts in this regard and its support for the United Nations Security Council in achieving international peace and security. He also pointed out Qatar's support for the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism and Doha's hosting of the United Nations Programme Office on Parliamentary Engagement in Preventing and Countering Terrorism, in cooperation with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism.

He mentioned the humanitarian aid provided by Qatar to sisterly and friendly countries, as well as the establishment of the Qatar Development Fund, which provides development projects and contributes to supporting affected countries in their quest for security and stability.

He also noted Qatar's efforts in international mediation and its call for dialogue as a basis for resolving all disputes.

Regarding the meeting's topic, which is the reform of the Security Council, he referred to the report of the high-level advisory panel appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General to study the situation of the Security Council. The report concluded that the Security Council has failed in addressing many issues. In this context, His Excellency highlighted the council's failure to vote on a resolution to stop the shelling of women and children in Gaza.

He emphasized that this has negative consequences for international peace and security, mentioning the report's recommendations that stressed the need to reform the Security Council's working system within the framework of international law.
