The Shura Council wrapped up participation in the 147th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the accompanying meetings that were held in Luanda, Angola.

The theme of the current session of the General Assembly is 'Parliamentary action for peace, justice and strong institutions', corresponding to Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Shura Council delegation participated today in the 212th session of the Governing Council of the IPU, which was held within the framework of the General Assembly and witnessed the election of a new IPU President for the 2024-2026 period.

Speaker of the Tanzanian Parliament Tulia Ackson elected the IPU President, succeeding Portugal's Duarte Pacheco, who ended his three-year term.

The 147th IPU General Assembly issued the Luanda Declaration, which outlined guidelines for international parliamentary action with a focus on strengthening governance, increasing representation to build legitimacy and transparency, increasing confidence in institutions, and strengthening the rule of law at the national and international levels.

The declaration also included a recommendation to increase the effectiveness of national human rights institutions, involve women and youth in mediation efforts to resolve conflicts, develop services in the public sector, mobilize financial and human resources to invest in achieving the Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals, and conduct a comprehensive review of national plans to achieve that goal.
