18 September 2018

The Shura Council is participating in the Regional Seminar on Sustainable Development and Gender Equality for the Middle East and North Africa Parliaments, held in Alexandria from September 18 to 20, in cooperation between the Arab Parliamentary Union and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The Advisory Council will also participate in the meeting of Arab governmental experts on the implementation of international humanitarian law, slated for 19 and 20 September in Cairo.

The aim of the regional seminar is to identify the opportunities and challenges facing parliaments in their implementation of the goals of sustainable development and gender equality. The focus of the discussion will be on 16th goal of the UN sustainable development goals.

During the seminar, focus will be on developing institutions to be more effective and transparent, as well as comprehensive decision-making processes that will accelerate real sustainable development on the ground.

The meeting of Arab governmental experts is scheduled to discuss a number of topics, including the humanitarian situation, the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC's) activities in the region, the practical application of international humanitarian law and the challenges it faces in contemporary armed conflicts.

This meeting comes as a follow-up to the efforts of the Committee on the follow up of the implementation of international humanitarian law at the Arab level, which began its work with the Committee of Arab Governmental Experts, which emanated from the Arab Parliament in May 2011.
