Shura Council Participates in Parliamentary Dialogue on Combating Terrorist Financing

The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism Parliamentary Engagement Programme (based in Doha), in cooperation with the Shura Council, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, and the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus, organized today the fifth parliamentary political dialogue on approaches to combating the financing of terrorism and related crimes, in the city of Limassol, Cyprus.
The event featured a recorded intervention by His Excellency Mr. Abdullah bin Nasser bin Turki Al-Subaie, Member of the Shura Council and Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, in which he expressed his appreciation for the organizers’ efforts, affirming the importance of this dialogue in strengthening parliamentary approaches aimed at combating terrorist financing. He also highlighted the constructive cooperation between the Shura Council and the United Nations Office and its contribution to supporting parliamentary knowledge and enhancing technical capacities in the field of financial legislation and related international obligations.
His intervention addressed the rapid developments in financing methods through digital platforms and the growing link between financing and organized crime, in addition to the need to harmonize national legislation with Security Council resolutions and the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
The meeting discussed a number of themes, including modern trends in online financing, the relationship between human trafficking, transnational crimes, and the financing of extremist groups, as well as examining mechanisms to track and disrupt global financing networks, strengthen parliamentary cooperation, and develop legislation and oversight in line with international frameworks and standards.
