The Shura Council has joined parliaments around the world in celebrating the International Day of Parliamentary Action, which falls on June 30 of each year and marks the 136th anniversary of the founding of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
On this occasion, the Shura Council, in a statement Monday, extended its deepest gratitude and appreciation to HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani for his sound directives and continuous support for parliamentary action in the State of Qatar, and for his promotion of popular participation, which contributes to consolidating the foundations of stability, development, and modernization.
The Council noted that this year's celebration comes within the framework of the IPU's commitment to building more inclusive parliaments by enabling all to contribute to legislative life, while respecting the cultural specificity, values, and national references of each country.
The Shura Council affirmed its support for international initiatives aimed at promoting balanced community participation through the empowerment of women and youth, thus contributing to enhancing stability and social cohesion.
It commended the pivotal role of parliaments in consolidating the principles of popular participation, strengthening the rule of law, achieving sustainable development goals, and expanding areas of international cooperation.
The Council reiterated its commitment to the values and principles upon which the IPU is based, most notably activating parliamentary diplomacy, promoting constructive dialogue, and strengthening partnerships between parliaments to address global challenges.
The Council also affirmed its commitment to strengthening its relations with regional and international parliaments through its active participation in the activities of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, thus enhancing multilateral parliamentary cooperation and supporting the exchange of legislative expertise and experience.
The Shura Council called for intensified international parliamentary coordination to address priority global issues, particularly peace and security, climate change, and digital transformation, contributing to building a more balanced, just, and sustainable future for all peoples.
The Council concluded its statement by affirming its support for the historic journey of the IPU, its pioneering role in promoting the culture of dialogue, resolving conflicts through peaceful means, and promoting human rights.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the noble goals agreed upon by the international parliamentary community for a more inclusive, cooperative, and stable world.
In 2018, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating June 30 as International Parliamentary Day, the day on which the IPU was founded in 1889.
