The Shura Council State of Qatar

The Shura Council affirmed that human rights represent a firmly established priority in its legislative and oversight performance, stemming from the constitutional powers vested in it, and reflecting the great importance that the State of Qatar, under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the State, “may God protect him,” attaches to protecting and promoting human rights.
This came in a statement issued by the Shura Council today on the occasion of the International Day of Parliamentarism, observed on the thirtieth of June each year, which is being marked this year under the theme “Spotlight on Human Rights.”
The Council noted that protecting and promoting human rights constitute a fundamental pillar of parliamentary work, through the enactment of legislation, the exercise of oversight powers, and the monitoring of public policy, thereby contributing to consolidating the rule of law, enhancing community participation, safeguarding rights and freedoms, and supporting the course of sustainable development.

The statement added that the State of Qatar’s concern for human rights constitutes a well-established approach whose effects are reflected across various national legislation and policies, in a manner that enhances human dignity, consolidates the principles of justice and the rule of law, and keeps pace with the comprehensive development the country is witnessing.
It pointed out that the Shura Council continues to discharge its constitutional responsibilities, placing human rights at the heart of its legislative and oversight roles, through studying and approving legislation related to the protection of rights and freedoms, discussing public policy, and monitoring the performance of government bodies, thereby contributing to developing the national legislative system, improving the quality of services, enhancing the efficiency of institutional performance, and consolidating the principles of transparency and accountability.
The statement further noted that, at the international level, the Council continues its active presence in various regional and international parliamentary forums, out of belief in the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in exchanging expertise and strengthening dialogue and cooperation, and in contributing to supporting international efforts aimed at promoting human rights, within a framework of respect for the sovereignty of states and their national and cultural particularities.

In conclusion, the Shura Council renewed its commitment to continuing to discharge its constitutional responsibilities and to developing its legislative and oversight system, in a manner that promotes human rights, preserves human dignity, and contributes to realizing the aspirations of the State of Qatar toward a society built on justice, the rule of law, and sustainable development.
