The Shura Council held its regular weekly meeting this morning. The meeting was chaired by H. E. Mr.  Ahmed Bin Abdulla Bin Zaid Al-Mahmoud, the Speaker of the Shura Council.

At the beginning of the meeting the Council discussed the report submitted by the its Internal and External Affairs Committee on the Draft Law on the marine areas of the State of Qatar. After the Council completed its debate on the Draft Law, it decided to forward it to the esteemed Government.

The meeting discussed the request for general discussion initiated by some of the members of the Council on traffic accidents, their causes and how to reduce them, as it happens in the Sealine, despite the appreciable efforts made by the concerned authorities, in particular by the Ministry of Interior to curb such incidents.

During the debate, the members stressed that in addition to the traffic regulations, the cultural aspect must be accorded a special importance and the youth must be educated about the dangers of not abiding by the law and of exceeding the speed limits. Certain dangerous practices must also be governed by laws to curb and control them.

The members also stressed the importance of the role of media in reducing traffic accidents and in clarifying its risks. They as well highlighted the roles played by the family, community and the schools in educating the young generations to respect the traffic rules and regulations and to abide by the proper conduct while driving.

A number of members demanded for reconsidering the penalties for traffic offenders as well as for reviewing the driving license policies.

After extensive discussion the Council decided to refer the matter to its Internal and External Affairs Committee to study it in depth and submit its report thereon to the Council.
