Shura Council Speaker Heads Qatar's Delegation to 141st IPU Assembly Meetings

HE Speaker of the Shura Council Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud chaired the delegation of the State of Qatar in the works of the 141st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), currently in session in Belgrade under the theme "Strengthening international law: Parliamentary roles and mechanisms, and the contribution of regional cooperation".

The IPU Assembly, which concludes its works next Thursday, discussed the most important topics listed on the agenda, including the election of the president and vice-presidents for the IPU 141st session, and the requests for the inclusion of an emergency item on the agenda.

In this context, the proposal put forward by India on tackling climate change was selected to be the subject of the emergency item with 809 votes.

The IPU Assembly continues to discuss its main theme on strengthening international law, parliamentary roles and mechanisms, and the contribution of regional cooperation, as well as a topic on universal coverage by 2030 and the role of parliaments in ensuring the right to health.

The meetings will also discuss the reports of the standing committees on international peace and security, sustainable development, financing, trade and the United Nations affairs.

Topics on the agenda also include the adoption of the item set for the standing committee on democracy and human rights at the 143rd IPU Assembly, the appointment of rapporteurs, and the discussion of amendments to the statute and rules of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
