Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Shura Council and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean

H. E. Ahmed Bin Abdulla Bin Zaid Al-Mahmoud, the Speaker of the Shura Council met this morning at the headquarters of the Shura Council H. E.  Mr. Antonio Pedro Roque, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean.

During the meeting, they discussed the parliamentary relations between the Shura Council and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, which includes 29 parliaments of the Mediterranean countries.  The meeting also explored ways to enhance and bolster the bilateral relations. A number of issues of common interest were also reviewed.

After the meeting, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Shura Council and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean based on the friendly and solidarity relations that link the State of Qatar with the Mediterranean states and affirming the role of the parliaments in strengthening relations between nations and in maintaining peace and security in the world.

The MoU was signed by His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Bin Abdulla Bin Zaid Al-Mahmoud, the Speaker of the Shura Council and H. E. Mr. Antonio Pedro Roque, the of President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean.


The Memorandum of Understanding provides for coordination between the Shura Council and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean on important issues concerning the relations between them and for taking measures to contribute to unifying the positions of the two sides on such issues, as well as cooperation between the delegations of the Shura Council and the delegates representing the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean in various meetings, conferences and seminars. It as well provides for working to unify common positions between the two sides in international forums and to exchange experience between the two sides.
 
The Memorandum of Understanding that was signed at the headquarters of the Shura Council provides for undertaking tangible initiatives to promote peace and security in the region and in the world, for work to accomplish the goals of the United Nations, particularly those relating to sustainable development, fight against poverty and strive for the proper implementation of the principles of the international law to achieve an international community free of wars and the threat or use of force, wherein peace and security prevail.

It also provides for holding consultation on matters and issues on the agendas of international parliamentary conferences, for coordinating and unifying positions on them, for exchanging of information between the parties in legislative, legal and political matters, for exchanging of publications and the legislative texts available to the parties and for work to achieve partnership between the Shura Council of the State of Qatar and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean.
