The Shura Council celebrates the International Day of Parliamentarism, observed on the thirtieth of June each year, and reaffirms on this occasion the importance of the role played by parliaments in consolidating the rule of law, enhancing societal participation, safeguarding rights and freedoms, and supporting the course of sustainable development.
This year’s commemoration comes under the theme “Highlighting Human Rights” underscoring the fact that human rights constitute a fundamental pillar of parliamentary work, and the responsibility that parliaments bear in protecting and promoting them through legislation, oversight, and the monitoring of public policy.
In this regard, the Shura Council affirms that the great attention accorded by the State of Qatar to human rights, under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the State, “may God protect and preserve him,” constitutes a firmly established approach whose impact is reflected across the country’s various national legislations and policies, in a manner that enhances human dignity, consolidates the principles of justice and the rule of law, and keeps pace with the comprehensive development the State is witnessing.
Proceeding from this approach, the Shura Council continues to discharge its constitutional responsibilities, placing human rights at the core of its legislative and oversight roles, through the study and enactment of legislation related to the protection of rights and freedoms, the discussion of public policies, and the monitoring of government agencies’ performance, in a manner that contributes to the development of the national legislative system, the enhancement of service quality, the strengthening of institutional performance efficiency, and the consolidation of the principles of transparency and accountability.
On the international level, the Shura Council continues its active presence in various regional and international parliamentary forums, in recognition of the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in exchanging expertise and enhancing dialogue and cooperation, and in contributing to international efforts aimed at promoting human rights, within a framework of respect for the sovereignty of states and their national and cultural particularities.
On this occasion, the Shura Council renews its commitment to continuing to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities and to developing its legislative and oversight system, in a manner that enhances human rights, preserves human dignity, and contributes to realizing the aspirations of the State of Qatar toward a society founded on justice, the rule of law, and sustainable development.
